Jo Braham - Lead

|
Jo Braham, lead singer, has been involved in the barbershop world since the age of six, alongside her parents, and originally hails from Leicester. Jo is married to Tim (also a barbershopper) and shares her time between home with their daughter, Hannah, and son, Jamie, and her part-time position as a customer representative with the bank “first direct”. Jo has followed in her father’s footsteps, proudly becoming Assistant Musical Director of a national champion chorus, in Jo's case, “The White Rosettes”. Jo’s first experience of a barbershop convention was in 1977 when she attended a show at the Leicester Convention. From then on she was hooked. To be honest, it was more a case of if she didn’t go, she’d be “home alone” as her parents, Anne and Mick, were so involved in the barbershop scene! Jo’s early singing experiences included four years in the Robert Mandell Leicester Children’s Choir (1981-84). The choir performed songs from shows and musicals and toured venues in the Midlands, accompanied by the Melachrino Strings & Orchestra. This led Jo to success in the auditions for “Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” in May 1985, joining the cast choir for a six-week run at the Leicester Haymarket Theatre. During this time she always maintained her love of close harmony, attended conventions, learnt the songs of the latest champs off by heart and, on occasion, sung with the visiting USA quartets - most notably The “Bluegrass Student Union”, international champs from 1978 and guests at a BABS Convention in the early ‘80s. A rendition of “Biff The Purple Bear” for her tearful dad in a backstage dressing room remains a “top barbershop moment” in Jo’s memory. She joined the Leicester Ladies Barbershop Harmony Club in 1985 (the same year as she met future hubby) and enjoyed singing with them and her first quartet “Girl Talk” until 1992. Jo married Tim and moved from Leicester to Tim’s neck of the woods, Yorkshire, in 1992 where she joined The White Rosettes. She has enjoyed great success with the Rosettes, winning three silver medals and six gold medals in her 15 years with the chorus. In 1996, Jo was involved in the formation of the quartet “Crackerjack”, who, following a bronze and silver in 1997 and ‘98 respectively, became national LABBS Quartet Champions in 1999. Crackerjack decided to call it a day in January 2002 after five years of great fun, hard work and commitment. Jo missed the challenge of quartet singing and wanted a new venture, thus, in May 2002, “After Hours” was born. |
